What is Building Information Modeling (BIM)?

The process of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is to create a 3D model of a building to help us see the problems and reduce errors that traditional 2D processes might not encounter. The BIM model has the ability to display the building model in the form of views in various ways appropriately for the needs of use whether in floor plan view, side view, 3D cross section or landscape, etc. Apart from the 3D model form, the BIM model can also be displayed in the form of a table showing various data items, such as an area table, usable tables of material quantification in various subjects, etc. This indicates that in the BIM model, the data is also embedded in the model. This allows the developed BIM model to contain both the component model of the building element and the component information of that component, which will result in the use of the BIM model in various tasks more convenient than the original workflow. In addition, when the BIM model is developed and the data has been saved, the model can also be exploited for analysis at the same time.

The BIM process can therefore be classified as a green technology that is involved in the design, presentation, and analysis processes with the Integrated Process working nature in different steps. Originally, this process might work in separate manner.

The developed BIM model will record the data related to Building Performance Analysis into the model. These data are usually information on the properties of various building elements such as the material properties in the thermal mass, the thermal conductivity coefficient, the specific heat, and the emissivity of these parameters. The BIM software allows the user to record in the BIM model.

In the process of creating the BIM model for assessing the efficiency of a building in the BIM system, the user must record information in the model in the areas including Weather Data, Material Properties, Internal Load, and Space Type to develop the Energy Simulation Model for further analysis process.

Assessing the building’s performance by creating the BIM model can be done by creating a simulation model on a computer relying on the created BIM model. We do not need to waste time recreating the model for testing like a conventional process. This greatly simplifies the process of modeling for testing. In the test, we can test in many ways as follows:
