Touch Up Problem

Features of problem

Colour work is the last step in the wall covering system. When inspecting the work, the defects of the wall can be clearly seen in the layer of the paint film, such as uneven plane walls, porosity marks. Other defects can also occur as working in other parts of the building, such as electrical systems, furnishings, and furniture resulting in the need to keep the paint job in specific spots.

Problems with collecting paint jobs occurs when the paint job is collected and the shadows of the colours overlap or not as much as in the area where repairs or storage works. It makes the appearance look like the shades that are distorted from the original shades even using the same shade and the same product in the finishing process. As a result, the work must be kept by repainting the entire area.

Causes

Touch Up problem can be found both inside and outside. For inside, it is easy to notice, especially the room where the light enters only one way. There are a number of reasons causing the Touch Up problem to occur including:

If the wall that is repaired or Touch Up with the use of surface putty and paint over, it will cause the shadow of the colour overlap at the repair or storage area because the colour absorption of the putty material is not equal to the absorption of the original plaster wall paint.

The Touch Up period of paint works is very important. If the paint is left for a long time especially the exterior colour, it will be exposed to weather conditions, sun, wind, rain, dust, oil stains, causing the colour shades to change from before the paint collection. As a result, the colours that are stored in the work are shiny and the shades are different from the original. The use of equipment to paint in the work also affects the shadows and shades. If the equipment used for Touch Up is not the same as the equipment used to paint the first time, such as using a paint roller but use a brush in the Touch Up. As a result, there are problems in Touch Up as well. Furthermore, the ratio of the water mixture to dilute the paint mixed in the paint used to store the paint and the first paint is not the same. It will cause the colour to distort. Most of the time, colours are found with dark and bright shades. If the used colour is a colour with poor colour dispersion, it may result in problems in Touch Up as well.

How to solve

Clean the surface thoroughly. Use ready-made acrylic for surface finishing putty. Then polish the decoration to be smooth with fine-grained sandpaper.

Use an old cement primer, Nippon Paint Excel Primer, to paint only on certain part before actually painting.

Then apply 2 coats of topcoat (Recommended colour system for exterior: 2 coats of Nippon Paint Weatherbond, recommended paint system for interior: 2 coats of Nippon Paint Aircare).

How to prevent

The surface preparation process is very important. Before working on the paint, the wall should be checked to meet the specified standards. If it is the new wall, the surface must be dry, clean, free from mortar, grease, etc. If it is an old wall, it must be scrubbed to wash off the original paint that has deteriorated. Then polish the surface to be smooth.

If there are cracks in plaster walls, hairline cracks, nail head marks, gypsum board joints, use ready-made acrylic for putty because it has good adhesion properties with many types of materials such as concrete, gypsum, plaster, wood, etc. (it is not recommended to use gypsum powder as it may easily peel off, requiring repairs in the future). Wait for the acrylic putty to dry completely. Then, sand to be smooth with fine-grained sandpaper before painting. Usually, if it is an old cement floor, oil-based old cement primer should be applied for 1 coat to enhance the adhesion.

The Touch Up period should not be prolonged as the long-left paint, especially exterior paint that is exposed to weather conditions, sun, wind, rain, dust, oil stains, may be caused to be in distorted colour shade.

Painting equipment is important. The same type of paint equipment to paint and Touch Up should be chosen in order to make the appearance of the paint film the same.

In choosing the quality of paint and paint film, a higher-grade product should be used. In case of having to leave for a long time before Touch Up, the quality of the paint has a long-term effect. If there is a problem, it has to be fixed and applied again. It can be completely covered with a thick film that adheres well. As for the paint film, if it is a matte film, most of them are indoors. The advantage is that it can help camouflaging uneven surfaces for a smoother look. It will also help reducing reflections making the surface look smoother.
